STAR Award 2009 winners announced
The sixth annual LSIS STAR Awards – the Oscars of the learning and skills sector – were held in London on 26 November. The winners were honoured at a spectacular, cosmos-themed national ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London, which was attended by further education minister, Kevin Brennan MP, more than 500 learning and skills sector staff, learners and special guests.

The 11 award winners are:

Winner profile – Terence Anslow, Telford College of Arts and Technology
Engaging employers category winner Terence Anslow, a contracts manager at Telford College of Arts and Technology, has, for more than seven years, been involved in the delivery of spectator safety training/assessments at over 80 football clubs in England and Wales. There are over 16,000 stewards engaged in managing football events’ safety and they come from all walks of life and ethnic groups. Terry has been instrumental in helping hundreds who left school with no qualifications achieve NVQs at Levels 2, 3 and 4.

Kevin Brennan MP, minister for further education, delivered an uplifting speech at the national 2009 STAR Awards ceremony. He congratulated all the nominees and winners on the huge difference they have made to the sector in inspiring young and adult learners; helping them to achieve their full potential.

The 2009 STAR nominees and nominators have contributed to an inspirational video about the challenges and rewards of working in such a vibrant sector. The short film, which was shot at this year's regional celebration events, conveys what further education means to staff from the sector.

Sparkle Auditions winner wows audience

The awards ceremony, hosted by Mike Baker, TV and radio broadcaster, and Reeta Chakrabarti, BBC political correspondent, opened with a blast as learners from Reynolds Performing Arts showcased a brilliant, athletic and technically demanding dance performance. The learners, who had won the opportunity to open the ceremony on the main stage through the ‘Sparkle Auditions’ wowed the audience with their quick moves and precision timing.
